Summary

Organizations in the rural community of Hazelton are using a community development approach for literacy development. While not always identified as literacy work, this less formal approach to learning is often successful in engaging participation but can be a challenging venue in which to measure literacy outcomes.  In this action research project our team developed a tool to name, measure and track informal learning that happens in a community setting, while capturing our own learning as practitioners navigating the ‘messy and ambiguous’ process of trying to measure learning in a meaningful way.

Research Question

How do you name, measure and track informal learning that happens in a community setting?
